If you own a 1966, 1967 or 1968 Airstream, you know that the curved frameless windows are the feature that sets it apart. There's nothing more streamlined than those windows curving to the profile of the Airstream's body.
Airstream used the windows for only three years, and replacement glass was not available for several decades. Vintage Airstream owners were forced to replace their broken windows with flat flexible plastic that does not seal very well at the bottom. There were simply no real glass replacements available.
Starting in 2005, Vintage Trailer Supply began offering curved replacement glass for 1966-68 Airstream windows. We worked with members of the Vintage Airstream Club and with glass specialists to develop a product that looked great and was stronger than the original Corning glass. However, the glass we were having made was not exactly the same curve as the Airstream wall. It had a constant radial (aka "cylindrical") bend to it, while the Airstream's body has a variable radius shape, being more curved at the top and more flat at the bottom of the window. At the time, it was the only way we could get the glass and it was far superior to plastic, so we offered it to our customers.
We are no longer selling that glass because we think we can do better. We have found a glass shop that will make the glass the way we want it made, with a variable curve. Important details:
Correct sizes are available for all three curved window dimensions, plus the flat front and back windows.
New heat tempered glass is approximately twice as strong as original Corning glass which was chemically strengthened, but not tempered to modern DOT standards.
New glass is 1/8" thick, slightly thicker than the original 3/32" glass.
Glass is mounted by reusing the existing aluminum glass bar. NEW BARS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE.
