Our quality bits are precisely sized for aircraft riveting. We offer a carefully selected variety of drill bit sizes perfectly suited for sheet metal work and riveting. Each of the sizes we carry have a specific purpose. Most of the bits are wire gauge size and are marked with #s instead of fractional sizes. Wire gauge drill bits are used where more precisely sized holes are required because diameters fall between standard fractional sizes.
All our bits have 135º split points. Split point bits center better, especially when trying to drill out dome head rivets. Split points are also better for drilling sheet metal because they don't "walk" as much as standard point bits.
All our bits are heavy duty and made of high speed steel (HSS) with a black oxide finish. Although they are high quality bits, they will wear faster when drilling metal than you may be used to seeing when drilling wood. We recommend always using sharp bits so buy extras. When replacing rivets, hole preparation is essential to prevent leaks and to create the best structural hold. There are two principles that should be maintained:
- Holes should be round, not oval. Reshaping holes with the next larger size bit is often required.
- Holes should be as small as possible but should allow the rivet to pass thru without burring the rivet's body. For example, a 5/32" rivet will not fit in a 5/32" hole. The hole must be ever so slightly larger.
